This is the third time i've had the pleasure of creating a wintry experience at Roots Cafe ! This time around I collaborated with Jamey Hamm (Owner and Assemblage/Creator extraordinaire), to bring you: Winter Sucks! {A Holiday Ex-STRAW-vaganza}: Works created with re-purposed plastic straws.

While most of the installation is made up of various light sculptures that incorporate straws, I once again created many Ornaments, Snow Globes and Holiday Trinkets!

The Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries are proud to present the group show makeSHIFT
running August 22nd – September 2nd with an opening August 25th from 5-7pm. makeSHIFT consists of works by Ai Krasner, Danny Coeyman, and Melissa Diaz. These three artists come together to explore everyday materials both natural and synthetic while inviting viewers to participate in the evolution of the show.

Melissa Diaz creates interactive environments that serve as a neutral space where
viewers can feel welcome to both play and reflect. Diaz creates a dichotomy between inner and outer self through the use of synthetic and organic objects. Plastics, fabrics, yarn, light, plants,and sand are some of the materials Diaz uses to react to her initial installation spaces. This space then grows and shrinks with the interaction of each participant as if it has a life of its own.
Diaz is an ongoing community arts activist; Diaz co-founded Thread Inc. in Orlando, FL, and is in the process of establishing a non-profit home exhibition series Open House Brooklyn. Melissa Diaz received her BFA from the University of Central Florida and her MPS in Art Therapy at Pratt.Diaz uses her work to “form a relationship with the surroundings and the viewer, paralleling her
framework as both an artist and therapist.” The show makeSHIFT is offering a unique opportunity for these three artists to come together and showcase the possibilities of everyday materials in today’s art world. Both Melissa Diaz and Danny Coeyman will be on location August 22-25th providing an in-gallery interactive experience to gallery visitors. All three artists invite students, faculty, and the community to join in the ongoing creation of this unique show and the possibilities of its materials.

The experience was moving to say the least. The focal point of my piece was an interactive hut, in which i developed the base/foundation and invited the viewer to add onto the piece, weave into it, etc. In these sense the viewer could act as co-creator in the space and their participation and interaction was the true completion of the piece.

Vegggie Unsloppy Joe

I'm still working with a low budget living situation, therefore, I am utilizing all items I have left in the fridge, mashing things all together into impromptu delights.

Unsloppy Veggie Crumble sandwich:

1)1/4 medium spanish onion (thinly sliced)
2)1/4 medium red pepper (thinly sliced
3)a few mini portobello (thinly sliced)
4)Handful of cherry tomatoes, halved
5) 1/2 cup veg crumbles
6)Olive oil or Earth Balance (currently all i have left)
7)Braggs Amino Acids (1/2 tbsp)
8)Spices to taste: (1 tsp or 2)
~Salt/Pepper
~Onion/Garlic powder
~Cumin
~Chili powder
~Paprika
9) A dash of Molasses or 1 tbsp of sugar

10) Squirt of Ketchup (optional)
11)Sliced of your favorite bread, lightly toasted
12)alfalfa sprouts
13)Dijon mustard

Saute veggies until nice and soft, then add crubles, braggs and spices, brown for about 5-7 minutes, add the ketchup if you like and sugar or molasses. Mix together so all ingredients are good and combines. Butter the toasted bread, shovel on the delicious unsloppy mix, top with alfalfa and put dijon on to taste. Enjoy! <3>

Easy Breezy Fast "Meat Sauce"

Im running a bit low on funds, so im trying my best to make something out of nothin! Here is my simple recipe for a pretty tasty pasta sauce.

1) 1/2 a small spanish onion (sliced thin, thin)
2) 1/2 cup of mini portobello mushrooms (sliced)
3) 2-3 cloves of garlic (finely minced)4) Veggie 'Meat' crumblers, which ever brand you prefer, I like Smart Deli's:
4) Olive oil (I ran out, so i substitutes with Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread)
5) Spices: S/P, Oregano, Thyme, Basil, garlic/onion powder (optional). Herbs fresh are the best, but dried will do the trick too!
6) Large can of Crushed Tomatoes
7)Sugar (Pure Cane, florida crystal is nice and not too chunky, sugar in the raw is way to chunky!) 2-3 tablespoons.

Saute onions, garlic and mushrooms, until onions become translucent. Add the veggie crumbles, and brown for a couple minutes. Add entire can of crushed tomatoes, stir in spices and sugar to taste, bring to a boil, then lower and cover to simmer. Its really that easy!

Add your favorite pasta and/or Vegan Cheese to taste. : )

Ive been craving Kale constantly, it is currently my most favorite leafy green! So I made this lil salad:

1) One Large bunch of Kale (spines removed, chopped)

2)Half a med, Red Bell Pepper (finely chopped)

3) One small Roma Tomato (cubed)

4) One small Has avocado (cubed)

5)Alfalfa Sprouts

6)Braggs Liquid Aminos (to taste)

7) Fresh Lemon Juice (to taste)

8) Salt (to taste)

9) Olive Oil (a couple tablespoons)

10) Balsamic Vinegar ( a dash)

Java Green, Washington DC

So I took a small trip to DC for the weekend. My main goal, outside of hitting up a few museums, was to get some vegan eats.

I went to Java Green for Sunday Brunch. Totally delicious, I go the continental breakfast: 3 silver dollar pancakes, toast, tofu scramble, tempeh bacon, and sausage. My friend got a similar breakfast, but with potatoes instead of pancakes.

Pancakes were really tasty, a bit on the thick side, but I like them that way. Potatoes very tasty, good Consistency and seasoning. The scramble was tasty, but I do wish there was more chunks of veggies, peppers, onions or something, I like my scramble alil chunky. Sausage, I believe was gimmie lean brand, which is the best for breakfast sausage. Also great coffee, and a nice choice of non-dairy milks.

Great service, cute area to sit outside, and the best...bottomless mimosas!!!!!

All in all, I'm a fan and would definitely go back next time I'm in dc.

*Many of my pieces are made from recycled materials, as a way to re-invent the intent of the materials and find innovative, creative ways to recycle. So many beautiful things go to waste in this world, i try my best to work with found object as much as possible.

Macro Vegetarian brand foods.

~Ok super short blurb about my favorite Macro-Vegetarian brand foods. You can find these to-go products at any health food, speciality store, or even your corner deli!

They have an array of veggie options, such as several types of dumplings, sushi, bento boxes (with noodles, rice and dumplings), edamame salad, veggie pad thai, various asian noodle salads, bbq tofu, cold 'chicken' and veggie salads, etc, etc...

I'd have to say, some stuff is just down right gross, some ok, but here are the two most delicious products i think they have: Hunan dumpling and the Sushi Roll

*I pan fried the dumpling with a light amount of oil on medium heat, continuing to turn so they didn't get burnt, but crisped up. I then placed them on two paper towels to soak up the grease. I much prefer the dumplings crisped up a bit, but they are also delicious cold. However, I find the Hunan ones are the only so far that do not have a funky smell or after taste when eating them cold (without being cooked or fried).

*For years I have indulged on these sushi rolls, i discovered them maybe about 8 yrs ago on a trip to NY. I honestly think these are some of the best veggie sushi rolls i've ever had. I think they are so tasty bc of the deliciously crisp crunch, bits of seasoned soy protein and drop of agave for sweetness. They also make a Macro-Roll, and Spelt-roll, all are good, i just find these originals to be the most yummy!

{Buyer Beware} Make sure the date is at least 9 days- two weeks away, bc even when these products are said to expire in a few days from the current date, you will find they have a bit of a funk instead of fresh flavor!

Spot-Light on two Grocery Stores in the slope!

I am continuing to share info about Vegan eats in the Slope. My two favorite places to purchase veg groceries are:

1) Balance for life, 624 5th ave: Small health food store with plenty of vegan options, such as: All natural healthy and beauty care, vegan ice cream, frozen foods, soups, mock meats, yogurts, various non-dairy milks, snacks, baking products, and much more!

*What makes this place special is the really caring and sweet owners. They also pretty much always have fresh home-made Indian food, made by the owner, Adela. They have donated food to several of my art events, so I love sharing the support! Yes, a bit pricey, but really the only place in the neighborhood that carries a large quantity of vegan finds! Oh, and they make smoothies and juices!

2) Earth's Basket, 599 4th ave(affiliated w/ The Corner store, 23rd &4th ave):

Just Opened up only several weeks ago and already booming with business! The owners are down to earth neighborhood guys who care about bringing rare, awesome, fresh and healthy options to their hood! The owners grew up here and take pride in their work. Best thing about Earth's Basket is not just the wide selection of beer and vegan cheese, but they will pretty much get anything you request!!!

Vegan items include, but not limited to: Vegan frozen foods, vegan salads and sandwiches, several varieties of non-dairy cheeses (Daiya, the melting cheese!, wide range of organic produce, to-go items from the V-Spot(yummy empanadas!), deli slices, mock meats, and much, much more! Also a bit on the pricey side, buy wisely.

**Still keeping the Vegan Mofo going strong!

~Here is a small/quick list of some of my Favorite vegan friendly places to eat in South Slope, Brooklyn. I will continue to add more hotspots throughout the month!! Please support and check out these super awesome local Establishments!

1)Pizza Plus:
Delicious authentic pizza, soy cheese,soy sausage,soy pepperoni, fresh salads, vegan knots, and even vegan calzones! My hands-down favorite vegan place in all of south/park slope!!! Super great service when eating in or taking out!

2)Roots Cafe: Not only is this place cozy, comfy and welcoming, but they have killer food too! Jamey Hamm owner & creator of the menu has taken careful consideration into always incorporating vegan options! While, yes, I think I have pushed for a few (tofu cream cheese) there's always been a nice variety. Homemade vegan soups, vegan sandwiches, bagels, tofu cream cheese, tofu deli slices and cheese, delicious salads, baked goods and vegan cupcakes! Really great people who work there, talented musicians and artists, and really great friends!!

3)Watana: My favorite Thai restaurant in the neighborhood! With many Thai options, I have found it to be the most flavorful, consistent and moderately priced. My favorite dish is the Vegetarian Mixed Vegetable...really light tasty garlicky sauce, not too thick or overpowering...just right. Great spring and summer rolls. Springs rolls so nice and crispy, not greasy, fresh tasting inside!

4)Red Hot: Chinese food, many many vegan options, occasionally the sauce is kind of gooey thick, my only complaint. I love the veggie sides, which come with rice, cheap, big delicious and filling meal. Also great: steamed spring rolls (almost like an Asian burrito).

5)'Snice: Although not quite South Slope, just a short walk into the park slope, many yummy sandwiches await. Great wraps, sandwiches, and side salads! My personal favorites are the curry cauliflower wrap (accompanied by mango chutney) and the smoked tempeh wrap (delicious chipotle dressing). When you eat in, every meal also comes with a lovely fresh mixed green salad, topped with carrot shreds and balsamic vinaigrette.

Veg eating in DC

In preparing to take a mini-vaca to Washington DC, I of course have began searching for vegan hot spots to hit up! First of all I was suprised by the plethora of vegan options and also the amount of fusion restaurants with full vegan and non-vegan menus.

I find that NY is lacking in eating establishments that serve for all diets. Mostly it's either all or nothing, either a veg restaurant or not. For the most part restaurants that serve both veg and non-veg options are oriented toward a specific types of cuisine, (ie: japanese, indian, etc). I found it refreshing to find such an array of options in DC.

Autum Harvest Dinner ideas!

~ Still at the begging of taking over my blog for a month of vegan blogging which will include, recipes, info, photos and drawings! This is just a simple recipe I thought up for a yummy side dish. I'll have more recipes through the week, next time including pics!

Roasted Root Veggies:

Veggies:
~baby carrots
~sweet potato
~Yukon gold potatoes
~beets
~butternut Squash
~Batata
~onion

*thinly slice all veggies and spread on baking sheet or pan.

Spices:
~Cumin
~nutmeg
~salt & fresh ground pepper
~Curry (optional)

*Sesame oil and sesame seeds

*Pour desired amount of sesame oil over veggies, add spices to taste. Then get your hands messy, smoosh it all around. Sprinkle with Sesame seed.

*Set oven to 400 degrees, bake for 45 min. - 1 hr.

Jazz up your Cookie Mix

~So in a rush to make some fun Halloween treats I bought some store bought cookie mix on sale.

I never make anything but just using the recipe so I added a just a tad of flare:

The recipe calls for:

1/4 cup water

1/2 cup softened butter/margarine

2tsp vanilla

1 package cookie mix

My Way More Awesome Version:

1/4 cup vanilla rice milk

1/2 cup earth balance

2 tsp vanilla (i mean, c'mon vanilla's good)

3-4 tbsp seltzer water (makes for a great sort of airy experience)

2-3 tbsp maple syrup

1 pinch of cinnamon

1 tiny splash of molasses

1 package cookie mix

Bake for 10-12 mins.

*If making a store bought baking mix is a must, always add a little flare, the baked good will come out leaps and bounds better!!!

Sorry i didn't take any pictures of the cookies, they were gobbled up too fast!!!

This is a movie everyone should see!

It's based an incredible book that i've been obsessed with for two years:

It's Kind of a Funny Story: This book chronicles the true life tale of a teenage boy who finds himself depressed, scared, confused, and winding up in inpatient psych. The story is completely brilliant, written by: Ned Vizzini, shortly after his stay in inpatient. I highly suggest this read. Vizzini gives a vividly true assessement of the feeling of inpatient psych, while also giving any reader a window into his mind and depression. I think this story is beautiful.

Trying my best to keep this art series alive! I have many goals I'd like to accomplish with Open House. Here are some of my lofty, yet not so lofty ideas:

Goals:

It is my hope that Open House can become a Non-profit organization that allows local area arts to showcase their works while also outreaching to bring the arts further into the community. Open House aims to continue home exhibitions, offering local talent more affordable and easier access to exposure and exhibition space .

The second goal it to provide access to arts and art making to the community at large. Open House plans to do this by offering free programming to the public, with a specialization in outreach to people with special needs. This programming will include, yet not be limited to, Lecture series, Open Air Art Fair, Free art making groups, Art Parade, and Exhibitions for the Special Needs Population.

.An Ode to Hope.

A little Poem I just wrote, that I hope to make into a song and sing it to xylophone, sometime soon!

~Somebody called to tell me that life is gonna get better, but I walked outside my door and snagged my favorite sweater.

Been living this long day, ground hogs day, feels like forever.

But where’s my Bill Murray, where’s the camera crew, where’s that snowy snowy love that wakes him up like that alarm clock buzz.

Please let me know when I found myself, please let me know when I seem alright, sorry if sometimes I am weird, at least I don’t have a beard?

The summer is coming oh so soon, I just want to ride and ride and ride my bike, far away way out of sight. And play in the grass and frolic allll day! Let the world just melt away, remember when things weren’t so hard, when all I needed was a fun backyard.

Oh but wait! I think I got one of those, so I’m gonna make me a little hiding cove. and if I’m lost, haven’t found my way, oh no, you haven’t seen me in days…just walk on back and ill be there, laying around without a care.~

Random Vegan Tips I just gave to a friend.

1) First if you actually do want to venture into the vegan cheese world, the best cheese for melting is follow your heart cheese, really good(theres a place in the hood that makes awesome vegan pizza, pizza plus). Tofutti makes singles that are actually very good, similar to kraft single type deal, not the most nutritious but awesome on sandwhiches!

2)Weird breakfast things I do sometimes: If you have left over rice from the dinner the night before, throw it in a pot with some soy milk, add some cinnamon, sugar(agave, maple) and bring to boil, toss in some fresh fruit, i usually do peaches, makes a good hot breakfast cereal.

I also make an incredibly weird breakfast sandwich, if you dont have time to bust out a tofu scramble (which i have my recipe for if youd like), you can heat thinly sliced tofu in the micro, with seasoning, s/p, tumeric, cumin, whatevs, can also add some thing sliced onion. Microwave it for a bit, while you're making some toast. I normally use the tofu thats been fried already (age). Add whatever you like, tomato slices, ketchup, hummus, i dunno. Tempeh bacon is also good. So kinda weird, but really good on the go!

3) Get yourself some vitamin B12 if you dont already have, so you dont feel like sleeping life away.

4) Restaurants i like:

* Theres an awesome sandwich shop, Karens in astor place, lots of options.

* Pretty much every bagel place in ny has tofu cream cheese, find out if the bagels are vegan, most fresh bagels are.

*Maoz, cheap fast.

*Vinnies pizza in williamsburg.

*wild ginger killer lunch special, bedford and also in soho.

*Cafe viva, east village, pizza and pasta.

*Better burger, few locations.

*Atlas, on 2nd ave i think, in east village.

*Pizza Plus, V-spot, park slope.

*Lodge killer, tofu scramble and soy sausage

*Enids, great veggie burger, no vegan bun though.

*So many health food stores have those prepacked veg sandwhichs and some bodegas, the vegan chicken salad is good, and tofu salad. Theres also another brand that makes a killer turkey salad one. Visit the sunac, browse them. Some are really gnarly, beware!

*Lola's vegan ice cream parlor, havent been, but have friends that work there, heard its killer.

* Theres also a million asian, thai, and indian places, and totally hit up those random buffets at delis, if its not expensive, some are really good, and have good stuffed tofu!

Ok this was a whole lot, im really passionate about my lifestyle, i hope this helps! Ask me anything else if you need, i know many many more places and fun recipes! =)

Transitions, Pratt Graduation Exhibition, group show. Dance performance by my dance collective, Transitional Objects (Myself and the Fabulous artist and art therapist, Mike Fox). This performance consisted of a surprise 15 minute dance party utilized as a means to make the possibly uncomfortable comfortable, creating a unifying free spirited collaboration.

Edith Kramer, is one of the Mothers of Art Therapy. She formulated art as therapy, the use of the "Third hand" and Sublimation. Her writing, such as Art as therapy with children, continues to be personally inspiring for me. Not only was she a brilliant founding art therapist, but an amazing dedicated artist! In order to pursue her personal art work, Kramer chose to work as an art therapist only part time.

Sweet Guac

Avocado is a most lovely fruit that does not get nearly enough cred for it's softer side:

Sweet Guacamole: (pair with chocolate tortilla chips: www.foodshouldtastegood.com , or cinnamon sugar pita chips)

* two ripe Has Avocado
* 1/2 -banana to taste
* pinch of nutmeg
*teaspoon cinnamon
* 5-6 finally chopped dates
* maple syrup or agave to taste
-Optional additional ingredient: 1 table spoon Vanilla whole soy yogurt, splash of silk french vanilla creamer.

So basically mash it all up just like you would any guac, this should serve 2-3. Make sure and warn people that its a dessert guac, or someone will be in for a sweet surprise(or dont warn, but it doesn't pair well with burritos, btw's).
